Hovis Hill - a quick pitstop in Shaftesbury

Last week, Mr Poachie and I headed down to Cornwall for a much needed staycation. Like most people, we had lots of trips planned abroad for this year but they have now been postponed for 2021 (fingers crossed).

We had talked about visiting Cornwall for so long so a few months ago we booked an amazing cottage through Airbnb and wrote a list of all the places we wanted to visit.

As I hadn't been in years but seen all of the gorgeous places I found it hard to narrow down where to stay and the logistics of trying to fit it all in, driving here and there whilst not exhausting ourselves and not enjoying our time off.

Mr Poachie was an absolute SAUSAGE and planned the entire thing, we starred places on Google maps and he got to work planning the itinerary and booking tickets. This got him some serious BF points. Love him 😍

The first port of call was Shaftesbury to break up our journey. The idea of 6/7 hours in the car seems so long but stopping 3 hours in was a good shout. I had seen this little village on Insta/Pinterest which is where I find most of my holiday inspiration and I desperately wanted to go and photograph it.

Just a note on long car journeys, how do you like to spend the time? I can sometimes get travel sickness so I don't like to sit on my phone or read a book so Mr Poachie and I decided to download some podcasts. We both really like TED talks and he loves Joe Rogan so we had a few of those to listen to but  Mr Poachie also found this podcast called 'Call her Daddy' which was really highly rated on spotify and we listened to for hours!

Now, just to be clear we aren't trashy TV watchers, we have guilty pleasures like TOWIE but we would avoid series like 'Desperate Housewives of New Jersey' or anything along those lines. So this podcast 'Call her Daddy' wasn't our usual choice but it sounded amusing and we had 7 hours to kill!

Within seconds the car was filled with trash talk, sexual escapades that you think cannot be true! New nicknames for certain, er, acts. And I think we were a bit hooked?! We could only listen to a couple episodes at a time and then need a break as it is two girls with verrrrryy strong American accents and they are hyper and giggly and really quite foul mouthed! But it was entertaining and we learnt a few things!!

Anyway, back to Shaftesbury. These photos were taken on Gold Hill, which is sometimes referred to as 'Hovis Hill' because there was a Hovis advert filmed here back in the 70's. It was the prettiest street with cobbles and thatched houses and gorgeous countryside views in the background.

It reminded me of a blend of Arlington Row and Mermaid street in Rye which therefore means it attracts a lot of visitors. It tests my patience when I'm trying to photograph places, Mr Poachie is much more patient than I am! I just get very frustrated as I have come to a specific place to get a certain shot and whilst I am happy to wait for other people to take their photo's it sometimes seems like they won't wait for you! Thankfully there was a pub at the top of the hill so we could enjoy a drink whilst soaking in the view.

Have you ever been somewhere just to photograph it? Or have you been to a place you had seen online and then you were disappointed when you saw it in person? Photography can be very deceiving as images can be so easily edited now. I have been using a preset for some of my images, not all of them as it takes a while to edit the amount of photographs that I take! I wonder if you can spot the difference..

Anyway, I will blog separate entries for our Cornwall trip as we covered a lot of ground!

Thanks for reading.
