National Garden Scheme

I have recently started working for the National Garden Scheme as the photographer and social media manager for their East and mid Sussex account. This is a charity which raised money through garden admissions and serving tea and cake! It couldn't be more of a perfect fit for me and I was so excited to be involved.

The gardens are a mix of privately owned where people open their gardens to the public and larger venues such as Borde Hill and Nymans and this runs throughout the Country. My job is to visit as many gardens as I can ahead of their openings to photograph them and then promote on social media.

I am always happiest when photographing gardens and I feel that this could be an untapped resource to share online, the National Trust boomed on social media once the bloggers and younger crowds started to visit with their cameras and I want to try and do this for the NGS.

My first garden that I visited was 5 Whitemans Close in Haywards Heath. This is a small garden but the owner has planted a variety of snowdrops amongst other flowers and it reminds us that with the first showing of snowdrops, Spring is not far away.

Tickets to gardens vary in price but are usually around £7 and booking ahead is recommended.

The main charities that the NGS support are Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute.

The National Garden Scheme doesn’t just open beautiful gardens for charity – they are passionate about the physical and mental health benefits of gardens too. They also support charities doing amazing work in gardens and health and grant bursaries to help community gardening projects.

So if you fancy doing something different with your weekends (or indeed during the week if you can!) then I would suggest taking a look at their website to find a garden opening near you.
